Gilman High School
First, a little about Gilman: Gilman School, a kindergarten through twelfth grade independent school located in Baltimore City, is a diverse community dedicated to educating boys in mind, body, and spirit through particular emphasis upon academic excellence, athletic participation and aesthetic appreciation. Gilman seeks to produce men of character and integrity whom have the skills and ability to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work. For more information, visit http://www.gilman.edu/. The Lumen blog aims to be a fun, informative, visual, and interesting place to learn more about Gilman. We see it as a place to get in-depth about the teaching and learning that happens here, as well as share stories about the people that make up the Gilman community.
Gilman School Design and Woodworking instructor A.J. Howard reports a “buzz of excitement” around a new high-tech piece of equipment in the shop — a computer numerical control (CNC) router. Middle and Upper School students will be able to use the new CNC router to create projects like signs, robotic parts, inlay pieces, electric guitars, and more out of a wide range of materials. See how it works in this short video.

Oskayak High School
Building guitars with a benchtop CNC router using CAD and CAM Software. Information and images provided by RhinoCAM.
Anthony Prima and Marc Gobeil, instructors at Oskayak High School, developed a program to teach virtual design and fabrication. Marc is only one of two people to have received the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence for this program. Because they are a well-funded school, Anthony and Marc chose Laguna because they needed a reliable CNC router that could not only cut the sizes they needed, but also fit in a small, tight space.
“Marc Gobeil and myself created the program here at OHS in 2014/2015 when I was an intern with him. Marc’s idea was to set up a program that could incorporate aspects of a shop class while administered in a computer lab. …We also need a CNC machine that fit well in our computer lab. We are very pleased with our decision to go with Rhino, RhinoCAM and Laguna Tools!”
Anthony Prima, Teacher & Technology Instructor

Machining a Guitar Body
The class designed the guitar bodies in Rhino, the CAD design and modeling software from McNeel & Associates. To create the toolpaths and G-code, the students used the RhinoCAM plug-in from MecSoft Corporation. The designs are machined on the school’s Laguna IQ. Because the machining was done right in the computer lab, the class needed a CNC router that was sturdy, compact, highly accurate, and easy to operate. That’s where they then selected the IQ.
The stock material was ash, spruce, or poplar measuring 13.875″ x 20.625″ x 1.75″ and then machined from 2 sides (top and bottom). Because the working table of the IQ is 24″ x 36,” the guitar body fit perfectly inside the parameters. The 3hp liquid-cooled spindle of the IQ easily handled the cutting power they needed. To finish the guitar, the students purchased a ready-made neck and other necessary hardware.
